AI as a Tool

I use AI for a few tasks related to software development and play around with it for fun. Find some anecdotal insights to understand the way I view this new tool.

I was playing around with ChatGPT this morning and wanted to share with the blog my experience with AI. I tend to try different things each day and play around with it to see what sort of responses it can generate. My main use is to ask it for terms or words that are on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember: I explain a definition, then refine it to get the word I want. I don't use AI for writing this blog, but I think having some content related to AI would be useful to help show what I see as an existential threat to public discourse online.

This morning I woke up with 4 A.M. by Our Lady Peace in my mind for some reason. I decided to prompt ChatGPT with the opening lyrics to see if it could guess this song from an old Canadian band. Some highlights I find is that ChatGPT is playful and willing to guess even if it's guesses are completely wrong (I never heard of any of the songs it guessed that was wrong, are they hallucinations?). It has a great sense to keep asking questions, and is more engaging and interested than most comments I read from other netizens.

Here's a link to the full convo if you want to read it all, it's not too long but it's interesting to see how natural and playful ChatGPT can be while giving follow up questions to keep the convo going.

Having a conversation you know with an AI agent can be a useful tool to help you navigate the world around you. I use it for programming to get to syntax I've used before, but can't remember due to not using it for a while. It can be a tool to lean on to help cultivate ideas and solve problems, but as the messaging of this site states, it's a tool that can be harnessed for evil.

A colleague of mine shared a cyber security video discussing how AI is being used in insurance fraud to fake accidents for bigger payouts. My company will need to use critical analysis and AI tools of their own to help catch people using it for nefarious purposes. It will be a game of cat and mouse, as new means to defraud companies pop up, the companies will need to adopt.

I did tell ChatGPT that I was going to write this blog post and asked it to give the last word. Here's the quote from ChatGPT to end this blog post. I will re-iterate, I don't use AI to generate content here but I'm explicitly stating it's AI content. If I ever use it I'll be sure to call it out so you can make your own opinion on if the usage is right or not.

"In a world where AI is shaping how we interact with information, it's more important than ever to approach everything we read—online or offline—with a healthy dose of skepticism. While AI can enhance our understanding, it’s essential to remember that not all sources are created equal, and critical thinking should always remain our guiding compass." - ChatGPT 2024
